From the 953 to the 959: The Rally History Behind Dakar Liveries
Porsche's involvement in off-road rallying began long before the modern 911 Dakar.
In 1984, René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne won the Paris–Dakar Rally in the Porsche 953, a specially developed all-wheel-drive version of the 911 Carrera 3.2. The car ran in the blue-and-white livery of its sponsor at the time, Rothmans, with red and gold accents.
Two years later, the Porsche 959 won the 1986 Paris–Dakar Rally. Together, these cars created a visual identity that is still closely linked with Porsche's off-road heritage — and the reason racing number 953 appears on so many rally-inspired 911s today.
Factory Rallye Design Package vs. Aftermarket Decals
Porsche offers the 911 Dakar with an optional Rallye Design Package, a tribute to the 1984 rally winner that combines two-tone paintwork with decorative graphics and interior details. Not every 911 Dakar was ordered with it.
For owners of cars without the factory package — or owners who prefer a different look — aftermarket vinyl decals are another way to add rally-inspired styling.
An aftermarket decal set is not a replica of the factory option and is not equivalent to it. The factory package includes paintwork and vehicle details that are not part of a vinyl graphics kit.

For owners who prefer the look of 1970s rallying, when modified 911s competed in long-distance events such as the East African Safari Rally, these sets use simpler graphics and contrasting door numbers.
Both designs are made for the Porsche 911 Dakar (992) and offer a customizable racing number (19 as standard) and a choice of matte or gloss finish.

Can Dakar Decals Be Adapted to Other Porsche Models?

- Printed sets for the 911 Dakar (992) use 3M IJ280 cast vinyl with a high-gloss cast laminate.
- Vintage 1971 and 1974 sets use 3M cast vinyl, in matte or gloss.
- Designed for dry application; the wet method can also be used.
- Expected outdoor durability of about 5–7 years, depending on sun exposure, climate, installation and care.

Every set is produced to order. Production and packing take 2–3 business days, followed by worldwide shipping in 2–7 business days depending on destination. Express options are available for selected countries, and tracking details are sent after dispatch.

What is the difference between Dakar decals and the factory Rallye Design Package?
The factory package includes two-tone paintwork, decorative graphics and interior details. Aftermarket decals are vinyl graphics that add rally-inspired styling without reproducing the factory package.
